The 3 godfathers of AI were awarded the Nobel equivalent of Technology awards [Geoffrey Hintom, Yoshua Bengio, and Yann Le Cunn]these gentlemen are renowned for their foundational work in deep learning and neural networks which powered the modern Artificial Intelligence Revolution”
These are technocrats who were the initiators of the AI revolution that is permeating all of humans endeavors, from technology, to education,to science research ; agriculture and even modern warfare has an element of technology in it as we have seen on the global news how undesirable proponents of different political causes can be eliminated by use of armed drones/weaponsied drones.
Currently as things stand AI is our present day tool widely used from academia; business etc it is powerful but narrow as it needs a lot of human prompting to deliver outcomes.[Artificial General Intelligence] AGI is the aspirational future—broad, adaptable, and human-like in intelligence. While AI is already transforming industries, AGI remains a frontier with both transformative potential and significant risks. Experts say that AGI will give machine learning Human Like Cognitive powers and an ability to self improve without any human intervention.
The ethical question is if AGI is going to surpass human intervention and self replicate in creating and recreating whatever is necessary from itself ,what kind of a world will future humans live in. Pundits assert that AGI is actually only 10 years away in becoming a reality.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to systems designed to perform specific tasks that mimic aspects of human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. These are typically narrow AI systems, optimized for a defined scope—like chatbots, recommendation engines, or self-driving car navigation—without the ability to generalize beyond their training.
As an Africa wide purveyor of leading edge technology solutions ETS Innovations has partnered with DATAIKU[www.dataiku.com] to provide our customers from Lesotho Zimbabwe,SA,Swaziland Kenya,Namibia and also to give our broad customer base a value delivering AI Platform that accomodates low code, no code, high code skill sets to create effective business outcomes.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), on the other hand, is a hypothetical form of AI capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge across a wide range of tasks at a human or superhuman level. AGI would possess reasoning, planning, adaptability, and even social understanding, enabling it to perform any intellectual task a human can.
In future will the world need less human skills and employ more machine oriented skills that can work long hours, do not need to take leave and self improve on any given task…will a new machine Master God rise up to take over the world I personally do not think that will be the case, people like Elon Musk are pioneering the trans-human movement where enhanced cognitive physical, emotional capabilities. This is a subject for another discussion but in a nutshell Trans Humanism seeks to establish Human –Machine Symbiosis/Cyborg State to which the core goal is to merge human intelligence with machine intelligence. Future Human will be infused with Brain Computer Interfaces [BCI’s] like Neuralink to connect humans directly to AI Systems ‘Stuff we have seen in Holywood Movies…..
Key Differences: AGI vs AI
Scope of Capability: AI: Task-specific, excels in predefined domains (e.g., image recognition, language translation). AGI: Broad, human-level adaptability across domains without retraining.
Current Status: AI: Widely implemented in industries like healthcare, finance, and transportation. AGI: Theoretical; no real-world implementation yet.
Learning & Adaptation: AI: Learns from large datasets but struggles with novel, untrained scenarios. AGI: Would learn new concepts and adapt autonomously, similar to human cognition.
Example: A chess-playing AI can defeat grandmasters but cannot play checkers without retraining. An AGI could learn checkers from scratch, understand the rules, and strategize—just as a human would.
Challenges to Achieving AGI:
Sensory Perception: Matching human-level sensory integration.
Manual Dexterity: Replicating fine motor skills for physical tasks.
My personal take is that with the advancement of robotics, where robots are created to mimic human movements in their totality this to can be easily averted. I picked up an article that there exists an AI Hospital in China fully manned by AI
The world’s first AI hospital, known as the “Agent Hospital,” was launched in 2024 by Tsinghua University in China, revolutionizing healthcare with AI-driven medical services.
Overview of the Agent Hospital
Establishment: The Agent Hospital was inaugurated in 2024 and is recognized as the first AI hospital globally. It integrates advanced AI technologies to enhance healthcare delivery and patient management. 2
Technology and Features: The hospital employs a system of AI doctors, which are virtual agents capable of diagnosing and treating patients. These AI systems are designed to operate autonomously, utilizing a self-evolving framework called MedAgent-Zero, developed by Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research. Capabilities: The AI doctors can treat up to 10,000 patients in just a few days, achieving a diagnostic accuracy of 93%. This efficiency is significantly higher than traditional methods, which would take human doctors years to accomplish the same task. Training and Simulation: The hospital’s AI doctors are trained in a simulated environment, allowing them to evolve and improve their diagnostic capabilities. This innovative approach not only enhances the AI’s performance but also provides medical students with advanced training opportunities without the risk of harming real patients. Social & Emotional Intelligence: Understanding nuanced human interactions.
Implications: AGI could revolutionize industries, automate complex jobs, an personalize services at scale. However, it also poses risks like job displacement, economic inequality, and ethical concerns if developed without safeguards.
Machines are machines they have no humanity and need to be governed by ethical human practices to avert an Armageddon as we have seen in the movie ‘War of the Worlds” where human life as we know it is at risk of ending!!!!
